2012 Winter Meeting at Paris
The TOS winter meeting will be held January 27-29 at Paris, TN. When the meeting was announced in the December 2011 Tennessee Warbler, the planned meeting headquarters was Paris Landing State Park. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, we will not be able to use the resort at the State Park in Paris Landing for our headquarters.
The Hampton Inn, 1510 East Wood St. (Hwy 79) in Paris, TN will instead serve as our headquarters. This is a nice facility, centrally located (Paris Landing State Park is 12 miles and Big Sandy is 15 miles). The basic rate for a king bed or two queen beds s is $79. AAA or AARP membership will get you a $5 to $8 discount. The price includes agood breakfast. Reservations: (731) 642-2838. Website: www.hampton-inn.com/hi/paris.
Another option is the Super8, 1309 East Wood St (Hwy 79) less than ½ mile from the Hampton Inn. Flat rate of $65, includes breakfast. Reservations: (731) 644-7008.
A field trip to the Big Sandy Unit/Pace Point area of Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge will leave from the Hampton Inn at 7:00 AM Saturday morning. For those driving up on Saturday, you can meet us at the Exxon Mini Mart in Big Sandy (intersection of Hwy’s 147 and 69A) at 7:30 AM. Plug 13700 Hwy 69A Big Sandy in your GPS. Depending on how the birding goes, we’ll plan to return to Big Sandy for lunch. Following lunch, we’ll work our way around to Paris Landing, visiting Britton Ford, Antioch Harbor and Eagle Cove. Target species include loons, grebes, diving ducks, gulls and raptors.
A good option for a no-host dinner, either Friday or Saturday, would be the Fresh Market, Hwy 79 in Paris, near the Hampton Inn.
