Breeding Chronology of Tennessee Birds

The following listing of early and late dates of observations of nests with eggs, nestlings, and fledglings was compiled from available Tennessee sources, including egg collection records, published accounts, Cornell nest record cards, Atlas observations, and unpublished field notes. This listing is updated from the listing published in Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee by Charles P. Nicholson (University of Tennessee Press, 1997).

The first column lists all species nesting in Tennessee for which a dated observation of a nest with eggs, nest with young, and/or fledglings is available.  The second column is the range of dates of nests with eggs, either fresh or actively incubated.  The third column, the range of dates of nests containing young, is not used for those species (termed precocial) whose young leave the nest within hours of hatching.  The fourth column lists the range of dates of precocial and other young which have left the nest and are still dependent on their parents.  All dates based on actual observations; none are calculated from incubation, nestling, or fledgling periods.  A dash (--) indicates missing data. An underlined species name indicates that the species was found nesting in Tennessee after 1991. An underlined date indicates an earlier or later date than the date reported in the Atlas

Breeding evidence of the Yellow-rumped Warbler, consisting of an observation of a pair and an unoccupied nest on 18 June 2002, has been reported (Migrant 73:115). This species is not included in the following list.
