SUMMARY:FALL JOINT MEETING - TOS/KOS - September 18-20\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Our TOS Fall 2026 meeting will be joint with the Kentucky Ornithological Society September 18-20\, 2026. \nPlan to join friends from TOS and KOS for the weekend. Both groups will hold business meetings\, we’ll \nhave plenty of field trips\, and our keynote speakers will be Cin-Ty Lee and Andrew Birch\, co-authors of \nField Guide to North American Flycatchers: Empidonax and Pewees. Meetings will take place at Lake \nBarkley State Resort Park\, and a room block is being held at the host hotel: KenLake State Resort Parks \nin Hardin\, Kentucky. \nHost hotel: KenLake Resort State Park in Hardin Kentucky. Both cottages and lodge rooms are available \nwith prices ranging from $111-$143/night\, plus taxes. To get the discounted rates you must use group \n3076 when you make your reservation. Reservations can be made online or by calling 270-474-2211. \nCottage reservations must be made before July 18th and lodge room reservations before August \n18th to get the discounted rate. All accommodations are NON-SMOKING. Cancellations must be made \nat least 48 hours in advance of arrival\, or you will be charged for one night. Breakfast is not included in \nthe room rate\, but there is a dining room on-site that serves breakfast from 6 to 11 am. Folks will want \nto plan on getting to the dining room early for meals as it could get busy. \nPlans for the weekend are still evolving. Details on meeting times\, deatils and field trip times will be \nprovided as they become available. For now\, mark your calendars\, reserve your rooms\, and check the August Warbler for more details.

DESCRIPTION:Field Trip Coordinator Ryan Pudwell is our leader for the Memphis TOS chapter’s trip to the famous Ensley Bottoms\, aka the “Pits.” Check out eBird sightings at this hotspot here. \nMeet at 7:00 am on Saturday\, October 3 at the T.O. Fuller State Park Visitor Center at 1500 W. Mitchell Rd Memphis\, TN 38109. We’ll carpool and caravan from there. You don’t have to be a MTOS member to participate\, there is no charge\, and be sure to bring binoculars. \nThe Ensley complex consists of the T.E. Maxson WTF sewage lagoons (aka\, the “Pits”) and Riverport Road ponds. The “Pits” consist of an array of sewage sludge drying ponds–some dry and some flooded\, depending on rainfall and treatment. Shallow water/mudflat habitat attractive to shorebirds is abundant and large numbers of shorebirds frequent the area from March through October with smaller numbers of birds through winter. \nNew visitors please note: The disagreeable odors from the sludge drying ponds can be overwhelming at times. After rain\, dirt roads are extremely slippery and caution must be taken.
